Some thoughts on the comments above:- I agree that Legendary has some poor design choices, as I stated in my review of that game.
- Yes, if you know the cards better you will play better, but that is like saying that you will play Monopoly better if you know the value of the terrains. The game is still shallow, because although some cool combos are possible, most of the game is driven by the luck of the draw (meaning which cards are available to buy). It is quite possible to be locked from a strategy or be steamrolled by the guy who first buy a super villain. The most glaring example is Flash superpower – you can hardly use it or destroy the gamewith it, depending on which cards are available to you.
- Thematically, Legendary just works for me: A villain is planning a scheme and five heroes are out to avoid that. The player who is able to better coordinate the use of said heroes (and their powers) is the winner. The repeated cards are just different uses of their powers. My 9-year old didn`t even blink with that explanation. She, however, cannot see any reason behind Superman wanting to use the batmobile. And, yes, I tried to say that batman just appeared for a little help and she was quick to point out that the card says BATMOBILE and not BATMAN. Her opinion is that the people that created the game didn`t know that Superman could fly.
- Legendary is a game with some personality issues and it is not original or groundbreaking, but to my tastes, it just offers me a real gaming experience. I can control my deck better, I can plan with more reliability and the different heroes, villains and scenarios offer a surprising replay value.
- To me, the DC game is a party game (something like BANG superhero edition), that you play for laughs before something more rewarding.
