I bought a copy of the DC Comics Deck Building Game before I knew anything about it. I love DC and I love Dominion so it seemed a must buy...Then I did my research! It seemed like the game was getting a bad rap. I heard Tom Vasel's review on The Dice Tower where he trashed it and I thought... Whoops.
But it didn't bother me. I bought it because I knew I would have a bit of fun with it and hopefully so will my sons when they get a bit older.
Last night I brought it to a games night with my brother and cousin. My cousin hadn't heard of it. We all had the obligatory laugh over the game's name. Neither were DC fans, but they were willing to give it a go. I said it was meant to be bad, that it was Dominion for kids, that the theme was just stuck onto an old game, etc etc.
Then we played it.
Halfway through the game I realised I was having fun. I saw the other two were as well. I was shocked!
Afterwards we all agreed to play it again right away!
Actual conversation after game 1:
"As much as I love Dominion, I would play this a lot because it is so quick to set up, lighter and fun."
"It's not so much 'Dominion For Dummies' as I was expecting."
"I love Dominion, but this is at least an equal for me as it's quick and fun and I will be able to play it with so many more people!"
Game two went just as well. Having a different starting super hero really changed it up as our strategy was forced to change. We were also getting more familiar with what to do and what cards to buy.
Actual conversation after game 2:
"I am so surprised how good this is. Totally surprised after the initial reaction."
"I know!"
We then took a break and played another game. But then we all wanted to play DC again!
Our first game took about 45 minutes but we got this one down to 30. We also ensured any Super Hero and Super Villains we hadn't seen yet made a showing.
Lots of fun again. The great thing was, each game we played had a different winner.
Afterwards we discussed different cards, strategies, and the possibility of expansions (super heroes, villains, and more!) We were surprised that a game lighter than other deck builders could have so much strategy and choice but be so quick to pick up.
8/10
Lastly, I would like to comment on the theme of the game. People have said they hate how you might "punch a kick" or give heat vision to Batman and so on. When you play the game, you don't think of this. You just look at the actions you have, add up the power you've earned and go for it. I think people are thinking too hard. The theme could be stronger, but maybe playing a game that's just fun is okay, too? The most popular card game is probably poker and that doesn't even have a theme. I think once you're in the middle of the game you might find yourself getting sucked in anyway, just like we were. I recommend all gamers to give this a try!
