My husband got the DC Deckbuilding Game for his birthday. He put it on his wish list because we had played it once before at our game store for an After Play video. We already had all of Dominion, but the DC Deckbuilding Game offered a simpler, yet streamlined gameplay that we could enjoy more often (like when I’m tired after a long day at work). We decided to pick heroes this time. I picked Aquaman while my husband chose Cyborg. He went first since it was his birthday game, but it didn’t help him. Just like the first play through, I really picked up on things quickly. Gameplay and strategy in this game comes really easy for me. Sometimes I wonder if my husband is over-thinking things.
I also got really lucky in that I was able to buy Arkham Asylum on my first turn, and thanks to Auqman’s ability, I put on top of my deck and played it on my second turn. My luck continued t hold out as I got the Batcave two or three turns later. I had a huge card draw advantage the whole game as no other locations came out. But then I also feel that there are not enough location cards in the game. Anyway, I was able to defeat 6 of the super villains. I focused my deck on villains and equipment to play to the locations’ card drawing benefits. I also was able to weed out 2 vulnerabilities & 2 punches with Nth Metal, one of the best equipments.
My husband tried to build a strategy around super powers and equipment for Cyborg’s ability, but I just always was one step ahead of him. If there was a cool card, he just never got enough power to buy it while I usually could.
I ended the game with 47 points while my husband had 35. I have to say, I’m quite proud of myself. I made Aquaman look cool.

This game will never replace Dominion for us; it’s not that complex of a game. But it is a good option when we want a simple deckbuilder. And it’s one I can see us teaching our more casual friends, as long as they’re not big DC fans.
I do not recommend this for anyone who can’t handle the Flash driving the batmobile or Aquaman swinging the lasso of truth. For those who are familiar with DC, but not die-hard fans, you can have a lot of fun with this game, mostly by making fun of the oddball combos and ignoring the anti-team effects where you can attack each other. Just imagine that the heroes are having a bad day and lashing out at each other, and trying to compete to defeat the most and the biggest bad guys. Then you’ll enjoy this game just fine, like me and my husband do.
