Cult of the New

I play new games when I have the chance - its fun to play new games. But sometimes new seems to swamp out really getting to know a game, and all of the fun that comes with delving into the layers. I can't remember the last game I've spent more than 30 or 40 hours on.
Friday evening was a good example of the tug of war between learning new things and wanting to settle down (you could think of it as the speed dating/marriage conundrum). I played Gestesblitz, the second edition, which reminded me what an amazingly clever game this was. That's why I play new games - every now and then you just sit back and go 'wow'. On the other hand I played DC Comics Deck-Building Game, as unimaginative in its design as it was in the naming department. Perhaps I could have spent that hour revisiting Dominion.
And then in the middle was Skull & Roses, a game of bluffing in the same veign as Coup or Liar's Dice. I did really badly at this. I do really badly at games that require you to 'read' your opponents. I need to practice that sort of game, which probably means not playing so many new games.
