I recently played a game and during two different attacks my group differed on how they interpreted a defense card working.
In the first case, a super villain's on first appearance attack had something happen differently to the player with the highest total cost of cards in their hand (I think they had to trash a card randomly from their hand instead of choosing a card to trash). This player ended up playing a defense card to protect himself. Does this mean
1) He was the target of the special part of the attack so everbody else just does the other option.
2) He is ignored by the attack so the player with the second highest total is now the target of the extra bad part of the attack.
The second time we had a question was also with a super villain's first appearance. This time, the attack made every player choose a card to pass to the left and the right. One of the players played a defense. Does this mean
1) He doesn't give or receive cards because he shouldn't be affected in any way by the attack.
2) He doesn't give cards, but he still receives cards. The players next to him were still attacked and that attack made them give their cards to him.
We asked the owner (who wasn't playing) to decide and he chose option 1 for both of them. Was this correct?

For the first part its the second one defense means he is ignored not a part of the attack. Which leads into the first choice of the second attack also being the part, defense is not included they players would pass the cards to the players around the defended player. Also for the first part that player should have declared defending first, you can't wait to see if you were the loser and then defend. Lastly, I believe these are attacks from villains in from Heroes unite.
