In both attacks the player should always play his defense before doing anything from the attack. Then if he defended the attack from super villian that player does not do anything from that attack. In your first example since he had already counted his total he would not be able to play a defense. Reason being is defenses come before resolving attack and he already began to resolve attack so he continues the attack and lost out on defending.

This is pretty much correct, but i will try and sum it up to the OP as easy as possible.

Here is sequence:

--Attack comes out, either First Appearance or from a card played. Read the text to the table.

--Ask around the table "does anyone have a defense and would like to use it.

If yes---> Resolve effect of defense then go to next player
Said player is removed from the whole sequence of the attack.

If no---> Player will then be a part of the whole attack.

Once all players have said yes or no then you resolve the whole attack for the table.

Basically if you resolve ANY part of the attack you cannot retroactively decide to "defend".
