The heroes have different abilities, and that unbalances them from the start! But, as well as luck, which has been mentioned, there is the personality of the player. We have someone who would pick Wonder Woman every time, and is almost certainly guaranteed to win. There is another who won't touch Wonder Woman (he's too much of a gentleman) and would always go with Aquaman. I would choose Batman, simply because I collect Batman comics, and I do well in spite of most equipment cards being low-powered. (Although in heroes Unite Hawkman is a favourite).
When playing with younger or new players, we encourage them to choose heroes with simpler abilities (+1 power per x card) rather than the harder ones (If you play this, do that, if you play another, do something different). The older or more experienced players in the game might be encouraged to choose a Hero they would find more of a challenge.
Yesterday, I played with a young player, and it was his second game. He chose my Hero for me - he gave me Hawkman!!!!
