Well, since the ultimate goal of the game is maximum VP (without losing), it shouldn't be surprising that this is effective... the question is whether short-term "always max VP per turn" buying beats foregoing short-term max VP in favor of synergy resulting in greater VP later. To that end, I think it's still too early to tell. To inexperienced players of Dominion, going for a pure money track can seem like a reliable way to win... but once you're more familiar with the game duration and card interactions, you can see when such a strategy would be sub-optimal.
The "max VP" strategy as posited isn't necessarily brain dead as is... you're already introducing variance based on variable VP cards and destroying Weaknesses... that means you have to make choices of whether to buy destroying cards rather than max VP or buy another variable VP card rather than max VP. These choices are based on the awareness of how destroying and variable VP cards work. Thus, with greater familiarity of the entire deck, more variances to "just buy max VP this turn" arise (not to mention player Super Hero role interactions) and the game's strategy is already more than one note.
That said, maybe it pans out those other choices are suboptimal but we don't really know yet.
