It may not be a must have, but it definitely has broad appeal. If it were overly complex or too immersive, you would turn off more people than it brings in. That's kind of the point of broad appeal.
What is your basis for saying it has "broad appeal?" Not saying you're wrong. But if a game has broad appeal, because it is simple (and therefore accessible), that is very different from having "something for everyone" for example.
I have no problem with games that have "broad appeal" but the other side of that coin is that this will NOT appeal to people who have specific interests in games.
MY specific interest is in Comic books (moreso than games even), and this game fails to meet MY personal desires for a comic book based game, and is a very poor representation of the DC Universe, for the exact reasons that this may appeal to a broader base of people.
Likewise, being very simple likely means that players that are looking for an intricate or deeper strategy or tactics game won't be satisfied with this game.
A game that shoots for "broad appeal" almost insures that it lacks deeper and more specific appeal, which is why I disagree with this review's conclusion.
