There are some really good ones. The don't need anything but what comes in the box, plus the solo variant rules. These are the two I play, are there are versions for both the base game and for the Heroes Unite set:

If you are only going to play solo (which is how I play), ignore Crisis for now, and get one or both of the base game sets:

DC Comics Deck-Building Game
and/or
DC Comics Deck-Building Game: Heroes Unite

Crisis does not have a very satisfying solo game, IMHO, and there are already 2 solitaire variants for each of the base games which are much more fun.

DC Comics Deck-Building Game

This solo variant makes more good use of the superhero theme and adds some complexity to the game:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/104303/dc-deckbuilding...

This solo variant is fun and simple:

DC Comics Deck-Building Game: Heroes Unite

This Heroes Unite solo variant makes more good use of the superhero theme and adds some complexity to the game:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/106284/heroes-unite-so...

For the simpler variant, use the same link as for the DC Comics Deck-Building Game,

but add this list of card changes:

Thread: DC Comics Deck-Building Game:: Variants:: Power-Token mechanic / Animal Companions (Custom Expansion)

My wife and I spend a lot of time playing DC Deck Building and all of it's expansions so we made our own expansion with a new mechanic. We've been playing with it consistently for several months now and it seems to work pretty well. Some cards are broken as heck and others are lame but over all we enjoy using it.
The first thing we did was create a new starter card: Contingency.

We replace 2-3 punch cards from our starter decks with these. They function exactly the same except that the power from them can be banked.
Basically we have a stack of cardboard tokens, not unlike VPs, that we can bank up and can spend like power at any time. All of our new cards are based around this mechanic.
So then we added a new "Animal Companion Deck" stack beside the kicks. It is kept face down and the top card can be blindly bought at any time, like kicks, for 2 power. There is a new card type included in these which is "Animal Companion" as well as new locations, heroes, villains, equipment, and super powers. Some of these cards are very good, some are so-so, and then there are Joker Fish cards.

There are ten of these shuffled into the "Animal Companion Deck" and like Weakness cards have no type, do nothing, and are worth negative VP at the end of the game. The main difference is that their printed cost is 2 rather than 0 which can be very important at times. While being the same as weakness' they are not technically weakness' so cards that say things like "destroy a weakness" do not refer to these.
So whenever you buy the top card of the Animal Companion Deck you have a chance of getting a good or decent card or you could end up with a bad card.

The rest of the deck is in this album here: http://imgur.com/a/KuB9l
With the 10 Joker Fish the deck is a total of 52 cards.
Some examples:

We have our deck sleeved so we just printed these out at home on paper and slipped them in front of unused cards in sleeves and you can't tell the difference. Cards that refer to "Animal Companion" cards mean the type not all cards from the deck. The two most troublesome cards are Marine Telepathy and Sub-Diego. Marine Telepathy involves digging through the Animal Companion Deck in search of certain cards and then shuffling which can be annoying. Sub-Diego is just really broken when combined with certain cards and should probably be entirely re-worked or at least changed to read "cost 1 or greater that you own".

Anyways we've enjoyed this custom variant and hope you will too. Please give this, or even just the contingency cards, a try and let us know what you think.

Sorry if this information is elsewhere. I've looked and honestly didn't see this question asked or answered. So, here we go.

My son has been having a question about Super-Villains lately. Specifically this: Since they have the word Villain printed on them, does that mean they are a Villain type card? And so would that mean they are treated as Villain-type for purposes of card and/or Super Hero effects? Example: We were playing Crisis 2 and he was using Crisis Black Canary. After he defeats a Super-Villain, does the Super-Villain go on the bottom of his deck as per Black Canary's power? Another example: Jason Blood lets you place a Villain from your discard pile on top of your deck. Does that include Super-Villains. Last example: Science Cell if worth 1 VP for every different villain you have in your deck at the end of the game. Does this include Super-Villains?

Again, sorry if this has been asked and answered already.

Super-Villains are card type Villain, so Jason Blood and Sciencell work well with them.

Note that in Crisis, Super-Villais are removed from game when defeated, so Canary does not get to put them on the bottom of her deck.

Thanks,

Actually, rereading her Crisis version ability it says any villain bought or gained "from the Line-Up". So, since Super-Villains aren't in the Line-Up, it's irrelevant. Thank you for the clarification though.

Even with a ~20% chance of getting a Joker Fish instead (and I hate this as a mechanism), many of these are amazing for 2.

You decided against the Joker Fish having a Weakness type?

Have you thought about things that take Power Tokens as Payments, like Locations?

Not quite... The Crisis Super-Villains United places a Super-Villain in the Line-Up. When this S-V is defeated, it is removed from game like the other S-V's and, if Crisis Black Canary defeats this S-V, that player does not get you use her ability to put it on the bottom of their deck.

When we first started we were going to have them cost 3 but with how lame many of the cards are and the jokerfish we decided against it. Though with months of use I can tell you we definitely do favour these over the kicks unless we're playing as Black Adam or Superman or someone like that. I'd be interested to see how it changes bumping their price up to 3.

Yes as "Weakness" is not a type. Cards that refer to card types already skip over weakness cards that way so I figured it should be left the same.

The closest to having any token payment cards we have is Detective Chimp who allows you to use them to buy cards from the destroyed pile. I could see cards that have abilities activated by spending power-tokens (or even just power for that matter) being interesting though.

Cartoon Network has Weakness as a type (because each Weakness card is unique). It also has cards with multiple types like the Crystal Gems who are "Female Gem Hero" cards.

Using MSE, I created and play tested a 'crossover pack' based on the Constantine TV show. Here are a few of the cards to wet some appetites. I'm looking for any interest or feedback. Cryptozoic allowed me to post these on their forum, but they can't accept them as a base for a new set...

With my friends, we typically use one base set, one crisis set and one or more crossover sets. All of these are determined randomly, usually after characters are chosen. It makes for some interesting games...

Inspired by the original custom ideas of Stu Anderson (andjosh05 https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1056972/marvel-expansion-av) and others in the variant section. I decided to add-on to the Marvel characters with character specific theme mini expansions instead of trying to make big boxed sets.

This is for entertainment purposes only. Not to be sold. All art work and characters belong to Marvel comics and the respective creators.

Now that the Life in the City cards have been made some of the other B and C level heroes can be made. Ones like Cloak and Dagger who mostly fight thugs and drug dealers. I was always a big fan of these two characters even though I feel no one has ever written them to their fullest potential but I digress. Now you can play these two street avengers and help save the streets of New York.

Cloak and Dagger are the shortest mini expansion I have made. Since they really don't have an archnemesis, except drug dealers, the Life in the City mini expansion will cover most of their enemies.

Note** The Police card's ability has been slightly altered to be different, effective but still thematic.

It went from an addition +1 Power for each additional Police played
to
If you have played 2 or more police, gain a villain in the Line-Up with a cost of 1 or 2 for each

These look good. I think the cards cost is slightly of +1/-1 on a few (like flaming hands). One card is missing a cost.

The powers aren't too complicated and fit into the current game.

Today's mini expansion takes us back to the obscure, Power Pack.

Power Pack Oversized card's artwork is from FF #15 Variant cover. Since they operate as a team their Hero card represents everyone on the team. Their team card is designed to bring in the Future Foundation and/or Friday into play.

Franklin and Valerie Richards are designed to show their world altering abilities. Franklin can add cards to the Line-Up or reorders to the top of the main deck. This represents his ability to alter reality and see the future. Valerie, being one of the smartest minds in the Marvel U, builds technology nobody else can conceive of. Thus, she uses abilities off the top of the main deck. Both Franklin and Valerie's cost reflect their abilities.

Future Foundation is a think thank that has a unique ability to peacefully solve the worlds problems by voiding the attack text on a card being played.

The Powers kids aren't really represented by individual Hero cards but by their powers. Since their powers have been transferred between them its hard to make their powers just for that individual Hero. Julie's Super Sonic Speed is the repictured and slightly reworded Super Power created by Stu Anderson (andjosh05 https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1056972/marvel-expansion-av).

Snarks and their "arch-nemesis", Boogie Man, have the AMBUSH attack that captures the lowest cost cards in the Line-Up or in each player's. When you buy their individual cards, you also get whatever Hero underneath of them. I think this is a unique mechanic that can work for other races that use capturing as a strategy, like the Skrulls.

The more I make these sets the more I understand card synergy and costing and better wording. I have gone back and reworded and repowered some of my early mini expansions I will be reposting.

Moreover, there will be more new cards to come.
